Body weight is a function of calorie intake not activity! The type of weight you carry, be it fat or muscle, is a function of activity! I love it when I hear Lifting weights makes me bulky. No, its what youre putting in your pie hole that makes you bulky. You can lift as much weight as you want every day in any format and if you dont eat you will be skinny as a rail. You can sit on the couch and never touch a weight and eat everything in sight and bulk up like a bear ready for hibernation. Either way what you eat is 100% what makes your body bulkier or leaner. Weight training, or lack of, simply sculpts those calories into the final product. When weight training and diet are combined in appropriate amounts and directed, you can be lean and toned, or you can bulk up. But it doesnt just happen by chance because your lifting weights. Quit believing lifting weights by themselves will bulk you up, they will not. As a matter of fact, constantly varied, high intensity weight training is designed specifically to create lean, strong muscles that have a high level of endurance. This style of weight training is also excellent at reducing body fat quickly with less focus on diet because of the relative intensity and constant variation. High intensity, constantly varied, functional weight training does just the opposite of traditional bodybuilding weight training where each muscle is worked separately using reps, sets, and rest in order to maximize size. Body building requires reletively longer periods of rest between movements to recover and increase muscle growth. In addition, typical body building limits cardiovascular activities due to the catabolic effect, or tearing down, they have on muscle growth. There is nothing wrong with either approach. Its simply a matter of what your goals are. One style is more geared toward bulking whereas the other is more appropriate for being leaner. In the end however, neither will bulk you or make you lean unless they are combined with an appropriate diet. Period!
