Bog Turtle Surveyor (independent contractor - Job 1464) To aid its conservation efforts, The Mid-Atlantic Center for Herpetology and Conservation (MACHAC) is seeking intensive seasonal assistance to conduct Bog Turtle monitoring surveys in the Great Lakes area of New York. MACHAC is a non-profit organization dedicated to the study, conservation, and advocacy of amphibians and reptiles (machac.org). Duties include: Assisting with coordinating field surveys; performing visual and tactile surveys; setting up and checking drift fences and traps; following a standardized sampling protocol to collect data; processing turtles; compiling, organizing and entering data; and assisting in preparation of status updates and summary reports. Candidates will be expected to be comfortable working in extreme weather and field conditions (high heat, stinging and biting insects, noxious plants, etc.). Required qualifications include: Bachelor’s degree in biology, wildlife sciences, conservation biology, or related field; A valid driver’s license, clean driving record, and personal vehicle (with proof of insurance); documented field experience setting turtle traps and processing captures (Bog Turtle experience is highly preferred); excellent oral and written communication skills; accuracy and attention to detail; ability to work under strenuous field conditions; ability to lift 50 lbs.; ability to walk carrying field equipment over varied terrain; ability to work both independently and collaboratively; ability to interpret topographic maps and aerial photographs. Preferred qualifications include: Master’s degree in biology, wildlife sciences, conservation biology, or related field; knowledge of rare flora and fauna of the Great Lakes area of New York; past experience leading field surveys; experience with ArcGIS and GPS technology. Candidates with substantial and documented experience Bog Turtle trapping, but without an advanced degree in the preferred fields will also be considered, providing all other qualifications are met. Duration and Compensation: This position will start approximately 11 May and end approximately 15 July, 2015. Working long days, holidays, and weekends is required. Payment will be up to $200/day for a maximum $10,400 (52-55 days). Additional funding is available for housing (up to $2,720) and travel expenses (up to $3,360). The services of the Bog Turtle Surveyor will be retained through a MACHAC contractual relationship with SUNY Oswego. The selected surveyor must maintain a general liability insurance policy during the work period with MACHAC listed as an additionally insured.
