Bohola Moy Davitts U16 team recorded a hard fought victory over Castlebar Mitchels in the final group stage match played in Foxford last Tuesday evening. As both teams were going into this contest undefeated a home semi final was the reward for the winners. The first half was a game high in endeavour but low in quality as both teams strived hard to land that knockout blow that would see them over the line. To be fair the home side were missing a few regulars and the panel was severely stretched and what ensued was a half littered with mistakes and turnovers as both teams spurned some great chances and possession with the Moy men in particular most culpable as Castlebar Mitchels went into the interval leading 3-02 to 0-07. The introduction of Kevin McDermott who had just arrived home from holidays and the moving of Michael Murphy to center back had a desired effect on the team. The second half was a classic encounter which had both sets of supporters enthralled. It was a game that ebbed and flowed throughout and the exuberant Moy men never flinched in the face of the physical West Mayo men. Two points in as many minutes by the outstanding Michael Guilfoyle and a goal by Mayo Ted Webb Cup winner Liam Byrne three minutes later had the hosts ahead for the first time a lead they never surrendered. The Moy men were now in control and used their ball skills and pace to great effect with some superb slick movement which saw them score goals at crucial stages and this was never more evident than midway through the second half with the hosts holding a narrow lead when a move started by Cormac Mulderrig deep in his back line and finished to the net by Michael Guilfoyle with no fewer than five players involved in the move. It was an outstanding team goal and a decisive one at that, as it was the one that floored the Mitchels who had pretty much given their all in a gripping contest. So Bohola Moy Davitts march into the semi final at home next Tuesday full of confidence and will fear nobody if they play like they did in the second half. Outstanding for the winners were Cormac Mulderrig, Fionn Mulroy, Michael Murphy, Noel Regan, Michael Guilfoyle and Liam Byrne.
