Boko Haram: FG can’t ban unregistered bodies – Keyamo Lagos-based lawyer and human rights activist, Festus Keyamo, on Monday said the Federal Government should give more priority to putting an end to Boko Haram insurgency and not just making pronouncements banning the sect’s activities. He was reacting to a statement credited to the opposition Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), which said that the recent proscription order against Boko Haram and Ansaru, desirable as it might be in tackling the terrorist organisations, violates the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria by stifling the press and tampering with the fundamental human rights of Nigerians. Speaking in an exclusive chat with Daily Independent, Keyamo said government’s pronouncement proscribing the sect’s activities should not have arisen in the first place, as it was not legally registered. He argued that the pronouncement may be meaningless if eventually the government fails in its bid to curtail the activities of the sect. “It is not banning Boko Haram that Nigerians really want to hear. It is how to tackle the Boko Haram physically on the field that Nigerians are interested in. “The issue of banning an organisation that did not apply for registration in the first place, is neither here nor there. “You cannot ban an organisation that was not registered in the first place. “The organisation never applied for registration and is not intending to do so. And again, if you ban them and you cannot curtail their activities, then it makes no sense. “So, the main activity is to stop their activities that should be of paramount importance, not just making pronouncements”, he said.
