Boko Haram kills 40, burns 75 houses in Yobe The Boko Haram sect yesterday attacked a village in Yobe state, killing over 40 people. The dead included children and women, reports from the area said. Members of the militant group also set over 75 houses, 37 shops, primary schools and some public buildings ablaze as they ransacked Baban Gida village in Gashua local government area. The village is located along the Damaturu- Gashua road. According to a military source, the attackers, wielding guns, invaded the village at night and opened fire on people who were going about their normal businesses. The source added that the gunmen arrived in a convoy of trucks and motorcycles chanting “Allahu Akbar!” People had to run into the bush and neighbouring villages. A commercial driver, Mudi Sa’idu, who narrowly escaped being killed along with the four passengers he was carrying as he headed towards Gashua, said he had to terminate his journey and make a swift u-turn on getting wind of what was going on in Baban Gida. Narrating his story to our correspondent on the telephone from Damaturu, he said: “We thank God the we are just alive… We saw hell. The terrorists really dealt with Baban Gida. It was a real attack. Flames and smoke all over. People were seen running anyhow. “Nobody can tell you exactly how many dead bodies he or she saw because everybody was after his or her life. “Nobody could face them because they are terrible people and mean business to attack. “We did not see any military man around either on the road going towards the town or coming from the area. No military presence as if the terrorists monitor the military’s absence before they launch their attacks. “By now the town must have been deserted or the military may have gone there to protect the town from further attack.”
