Bolger Tragedy The awful tragedy in the east of our county - TopicsExpress

Bolger Tragedy The awful tragedy in the east of our county yesterday once again brings home to seaside villages the dangers involved in trying to make a living from the sea. A living that through legislation is becoming harder and harder, for those still involved. The three Bolger brothers were from a very well-known and well respected fishing family and our thoughts and prayers go out to them today, one cannot imagine what their mother must be feeling right now. As someone who comes from a family that had, up until the 1980s, always relied on the sea to put bread on the table, I fully understand why men like the Bolger brothers continued to fish even after the traditional salmon fishing aspect had been torn from them. It’s all they knew. Fishing for lobster from a 20ft boat off to sea this time of year would not have been what they were doing yesterday had the salmon season still been in place, they would have been back the river in a more secluded area doing what they would always have been doing, casting a net out. May They Rest In Peace. As an aside to this story, the quick recovery of the bodies and the quick response times from all the emergency services show us once again that there should NEVER be cutbacks even mentioned where these people, the emergency service personnel, are concerned. It is not too long ago that a Government minister was ready to curtail or even remove the helicopter from Waterford, in case some of you have short memories. A local organisation posted a photo in the last few days which showed a car blocking the entrance to our beach here in Ardmore, God Forbid if Ardmore were to be visited by a tragedy similar to yesterdays one; and an ambulance were need to access the beach. I hope whoever parked that red car in front of the beach entrance over the weekend will think of that the next time they feel the need to park so near to a bit of sand.
