Bommen & Granaten from Brouwerij De Molen in Bodegraven, Netherlands I am a curious sort of fellow. I saw this beer on the shelf today a Calandros in Baton Rouge, and I had to buy it and as I drove home, I kept thinking about it, and so I chilled it in ice as soon as I got home, and here I am tasting it. If you go to Calandros, you are bound to find at least one beer that will pique your interest, and you will buy it, and you will taste it as soon as you can. Calandros (on Perkins Road in Baton Rouge) is a must visit for craft beer drinkers and those seeking hard-to-find beers. It has been almost a year since Ive been there, and it is probably a good thing it is out of my way, because they have huge assortment of beers. On my last trip there in 2013, my most memorable beer was the 2012 Adnams Tally-Ho - it was superb! I did see the 2012 Tally-Ho again today, but I did not grab another bottle, mainly because Ive already reviewed it here last year, and I wanted to get some new stuff to taste and review. Here is how this purchase went down for Mike --- So this is obviously an 11.2 oz. bottle I am holding in my hand with a clear misprint on the label proclaiming it to be 1 PT 9.4 FL OZ. Strange, I thought to myself. Next thing is the brew date - Brewed on 1/24/2010 and bottled on 2/24/10. Hmmm. Mikeys brain says: A ready to drink bottle-aged beer. More label info - 15.2% ABV. Mikeys brains says: OK, this is one big and bad motor-scooter right here. Next thing on the label is this: This beer will be good for 25 years if kept cool and dark. Alrighty then, a beer made for the long haul. Next thing on the label: This batch - 1200 bottles of 33cl. 33cl = 11.2 ounces, confirming the typo I mentioned above. OK, so now I have to get this bottle of beer - there were more bottles, and they all read the same with the same typo. Done Deal - bottle in the basket. And now, here I am, tasting this big-ass mother-frocker! I put this puppy on ice as soon as I get home from Baton Rouge. Fast forward through unloading the car and chilling the beer and getting out of the funeral dress up clothes (that I was wearing from previously attending a service for a friend and co-worker) and getting into my jeans and t-shirt. Now I have a chalice. This is a Barleywine Style Ale, so a chalice should be good. Forget every other standard beer review. This is wild. No carbonation, no foam, super dark and cloudy, a totally still pour. Oh, shit, I think! This one might be bad. NOT. This is way up the ladder for craft beer drinkers. Loaded with taste. Superior dark fruits, rum-soaked raisins, figs, toffee, caramel, brown sugar, molasses, sherry, and other liqueur flavors. Over the top decadent. What a treat! See the picture below that I took with my cell phone - this is a standard Walmart Gift Card and a cork from a bottle to give you a sense of size - look closely at the label on the bottle - 1 PT. 9.4 FL OZ. Wow! That would be the size of a standard wine bottle!
