Bonneville Lock and Dam hosted its annual Great Electrifying Event Sat., Feb. 22, 2014, an event that introduces hydropower concepts to elementary and middle school students and their families. This year’s attendance was a record-breaker, with 410 individual attendees. At the series of stations, 202 children enjoyed hands-on demonstrations about hydropower and electricity, and completed passports or activity books. More than 330 people took the guided tours. The event made excellent use of the layout and design of the Washington Shore Visitor Facilities, and by bringing picnic tables indoors, we offered a warm place to picnic. Concentrating staff allowed us to simultaneously staff both 12 tours and several educational stations. Natural Resource specialists Robin Norris and Ryan Braaten coordinated and re-designed this years event to make it more user-friendly and less demanding. Four other staff (Leo Scherban, Ron Woodall, Mason Scharfe, and Meg Sleeper) and two volunteers (Chuck Oliver and Keith Loeffler) greeted guests as they arrived and assisted participants with the activity stations, hands-on exhibits and guided tours. A huge “thank you” to our staff, volunteers and Discover Your Northwest for making the 2014 Great Electrifying Event a big success this year.
