Book Drive to Benefit Children of West, Texas 2014 Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service The City of Corpus Christi Retired and Senior Volunteer Program and Senior Companion Program will celebrate the 2014 Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service on January 20 by coordinating a local book drive benefiting the children of West, Texas. Volunteers of the City of Corpus Christi Retired and Senior Volunteer Program and Senior Companion Program will wrap up the collection of new or gently used children’s books on January 20, 2014 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at City Hall, 3rd floor, Parks and Recreation Department. After collection day, the books will be delivered to the town of West, where they will be sorted by Senior Corps volunteers from around the state. The ‘One Book at a Time’ MLK service activity will aid in rebuilding the West Elementary School Library which was devastated as a result of the West Fertilizer Company explosion on April 17, 2013. This is part of a statewide effort led by the Texas Senior Corps Association. Senior Corps volunteers were among the first responders after the explosion, and have continued to play a lead role in long-term recovery efforts in West. According to Texas Senior Corps Association President Walt McFadden, “Senior Corps projects in Texas have supported the MLK Day of Service for many years, but this is the first time that our 54 individual programs have coordinated their efforts for a common beneficiary. This represents one of many ways that Senior Corps volunteers are making a difference in Texas communities.” The Senior Corps is composed of volunteers age 55 and older who serve through the component programs of Foster Grandparents, Senior Companions, and RSVP. The Senior Corps programs are administered by the Corporation for National and Community Service, which also coordinates the nation’s annual MLK Day of Service activities.
