Book Embedded Vocabulary Instruction Quick Step One: Planning Choose an appropriate book. Pick four to five unfamiliar target vocabulary words from the book plan to read. Step Two: Pre‐Teach Introduce the children to the target vocabulary words by using the best pictures of the target words. It is not necessary for the text of the word to be on the same page as the picture. • You are NOT reading the book during pre-teach. Step Three: First Encounter Read the book for the first time, calling attention to the new target vocabulary words. It is necessary for the text to be on the page where you recall the definition. It is also beneficial if there is a picture on the page OR you can flip to the page where the children can see a picture. Step Four: Second Encounter Read the book for the second time, calling attention to the new target vocabulary words. Whenever possible, you may pick another place in the book to call attention to the target vocabulary words so children are seeing the picture and hearing the word in a different context. If there is not a picture of the target vocabulary word, you can flip to a page where there is a visual representation of the target vocabulary word.
