Book Review-The Cold Hard Truth and The Craftsman ON SEP 28 IN BOOK REVIEWS BY CHRIS MANTELOS “Cold Hard Truth” by Kevin O’Leary bases its premise on money brings freedom. Yet freedom comes in varying degrees. “Cold Hard Truth” suggests people are working harder than ever before. In a capitalist society there is a difference between those who own capital and those who do not. For example, those people who own property and those who rent. Statistics Canada shows in 2006 “over two-thirds (68.4%) owned their home.” statcan.gc.ca/daily-quotidien/080604/dq080604a-eng.htm On CBC Ideas “Left Behind” speaks about how since the 1980’s finance capital, has become more efficient, not more productive than in the past. cbc.ca/ideas/episodes/2012/01/16/left-behind/ In contrast to CBC Ideas “Left Behind” notion that since the 1980’s finance capital has become more efficient allowing for corporate profits to multiply. “The Craftsman” by Richard Sennett suggests bringing back labour production and skill will allow for the western economy to become competitive and grow as it did during the 1960’s and 1970’s in the midst of the golden age of capitalism. Thus satisfaction for workers can only come by the fruit of their labour. cbc.ca/ideas/episodes/2012/01/16/left-behind/ In contrast to “The Craftsman” by Richard Sennett which proclaims a skilled rather than a de-skilled workforce will raise worker productivity and economic growth. A greater responsibility towards accountability in government has grown out of discontent for politicians. The solution to greater inclusion of employees to their labour, making corporations co-operatives ,where the decision-making process is horizontal rather than vertical in services and products. Decisions now need to be made quickly and effectively. However, without patience and slow recollection.
