Bookbinding is an very cool art. When given a little latitude, creative binders can come up with fantastic designs. Working with local binders, we have dabbled a bit in this craft and have seen samples and prototypes that have opened us up to a world of ideas (many of which have been deemed too out there for mineral collectors). I asked Jeff Scovil for an update this week, and he chose to send a photo from the mindat conference in Madagascar earlier in the year. The photo brought to mind a binding of Edgar Allan Poes The Raven that incorporated chicken foot leather. I am not crazy about the velum strips that interrupt the otherwise clean design, but I love the reptilian look of the leather.
