Books of the Year 2013 The stand-out nature book of the year - TopicsExpress

Books of the Year 2013 The stand-out nature book of the year … has to be Mark Cocker [and David Tipling’s] huge and hugely informative Birds & People. Cocker has been observing birds for 40 years, and this grand encyclopaedic look at our relationship with every species is fuelled by both enthusiasm and quiet but profound anger at the often shocking treatment we have meted out to them. Andrew Holgate The Sunday Times 24 November 2013 The four non-fiction books I most valued this year have an unusual strength and depth in common; the single themes they profess to focus on are also the Trojan horses through which their writers smuggle in a whole wide world of instruction, knowledge and contemporary significance. They are: Spillover, David Quammens investigation of animal-to-human viruses (Vintage); Falling Upwards (Harper Collins), Richard Holmess history of ballooning; The Searchers (Bloomsbury), Glenn Frankels account of the 1836 abduction by Comanches of Cynthia Ann Parker and its unending aftermath; and Mark Cockers loving and magisterial Birds and People (Jonathan Cape). Jim Crace, Guardian 23 November 2013 Thank you nice Messrs Holgate and Crace for your kind words
