Boris Johnson is perhaps my favorite active politician anywhere, mainly because he and I share so many intellectual interests (languages, history, literature, rhetoric), so many personal heroes (Winston Churchill, William Shakespeare, Margaret Thatcher, Demosthenes), and so many policy tendencies (pro-immigration, pro-foreign language studies, pro-free markets, pro-Anglo-American relations). Sorely do I wish that more American politicians were so-called renaissance men like Boris, as capable of delivering animated lectures before rapt audiences as they are of glad-handing their constituents. My only reservation about this lecture—which Id heartily invite you to listen to—is that Boris asserts London is the best present-day analogue to ancient Athens, whereas Id argue that Boris own birthplace, my beloved New York City, is Athens true present-day heir. Then again, Im as decidedly pro-American as Boris is pro-British.
