Born again Indian? I entered Amma s retreat as a hip and happening Asian American free spirited dude. I was dressed somewhat simple with a little urban edge...My fashion has a touch of spirituality in my accessories, mostly around my neck and right wrist. However, after a three day spiritual immersion with this amazing Guru, Divine mother and her Swamis, I began to change in more ways than one. I shopped at one of the Amma s consignment store and fell in love with one of the Kurtas. It is an Indian outer wear. I bought that so I had something more traditional and formal to wear for the Devi Bhava celebration. I also fell in love with some of the Mala beads that had kudradsha that were sold in the main store. During the retreat, I ate and drank Indian food and beverages and loved it immensely. I love Amma s Chai Tea especially. Nothing like it first thing in the morning and in the evening. Saturday morning it rained in the am, I had forgotten to bring my umbrella. I had to think quick so I grabbed a scarf and wrapped it into a turban. By the time I reached the temple, people looked at me as if I was some sort of mystic or Guru especially since I was wearing a traditional Kurta. Lol! After singing many Spiritual sings in Hindi and reading the Bhagavad Gita, I felt like I had transformed into a full fledged Indian. As I started to leave the temple, I decided to do one last final service deed to show my gratitude to Amma for all I had learned. I drove to the carpool lane and end up driving two Indian families. You should have seen the look on their face when I came out of the car to open the door for them to come in. They were in shock seeing this Asian dude looking more Indian than they did. The irony was that they were dressed more western than me. To make matters worse, I had my Indian CD playing the Divine songs we were singing during our retreat. I think these Indian brothers and sisters were probably thinking they were in the twilight zone. I was fully dressed with all my spiritual beads and bangle and looked more like an Indian Guru. Had I told them I was Blake Sinclair I think they would have freaked out. As I dropped off my passengers they had the deepest gratitude and smile on their face. Lol! Nameste! Sweet dreams!
