Born into slavery in North Carolina 1825, Benjamin Sterling Turner became an entrepreneur, business executive, civic leader, and legislator. In 1870, Turner was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives representing Alabamas First District. He operated a successful livery stable, worked as a farmer, merchant, and teacher, and founded the first school in Selma, Alabama for the education of Black American children.
