Born on February 2, 1871 into one of the oldest and best known families in Bay St. Louis at the time, Gaston Gabriel Gardebled was a well liked man by everyone. In his private business, Gardebled was a respected contractor that provided his clients with quality work. He was responsible for many prominent buildings in the area, including the historic Bay St. Louis City Hall on Second Street which was built in 1905. Gardebled would later serve as Mayor in that very building. He served the people of Bay St. Louis with pride and dignity. It is said that Mayor Gardebled was “alive to every public interest, and was always identified with all that was best for the city.” While serving as Mayor, Gardebled would advocate for many public improvements, such as more and better streets, more and better lighting, and was a “friend and persistent worker for the public school.” The mayor was also a member of the local fire company which was made up of volunteers at the time, a member of the Masons and also the Woodmen of the Word. Mayor Gardebled passed away on July 8, 1913 at the age of 42. He was survived by his widow, May Huber Gardebled, their seven children and his mother, Celine Gardebled, who was nearly 90 years old at the time of her son’s death.
