Born on this date in 1948, Director/Screenwriter/Producer/Editor/composer JOHN CARPENTER. While he broke big with the horror crowd in 1978, when he gave us a socially awkward fellow named Michael Myers, that was actually his third. His debut, DARK STAR was a zany off kilter sci-fi comedy. He continued to work within the blood-splattered confines of the horror genre, delivering classics such as THE FOG, CHRISTINE, THE THING, PRINCE OF DARKNESS, BODY BAGS and a few others. His not-necessarily horror but maybe fantastical or sci-fi films; THEY LIVE, BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA are a lot of fun. ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK is an absolute classic, I wont say much on the ill-advised sequel that was pooped out in the late 90s, ESCAPE FROM L.A. His career has not been without some bad films, GHOSTS OF MARS is virtually unwatchable. While MEMOIRS OF AN INVISIBLE MAN is a close second. Carpenter is a loyal director, often using the same actors/actresses in his films. Kurt Russell has been in like One-hundred and ninety-six John Caprenter films while Tom Atkins was in thirty-nine and Jamie Lee Curtis in two, three if you count her voice role in ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK. He has been semi-retired since 2002, directing a pair of episodes for Showtimes MASTERS OF HORROR series. He recently began promoting an album of film scores and theme music called Lost Themes that is to be released next month.--John
