Borno PDP crisis: Lawan heads to court Published on Friday, 02 January 2015 05:00 Written by Hamza Idris, Maiduguri The crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Borno State over its gubernatorial candidate deepened with the substituted candidate Gambo Lawan seeking for redress at a High Court in Abuja. Sources close to Lawan and the PDP told our correspondent in Maiduguri that he has filed a case at a court in Abuja, seeking for his immediate reinstatement as the valid gubernatorial candidate of the PDP in Borno State. Lawan, who was elected during a mini-primary in Abuja on December 15, was replaced on December 25 last year by Alhaji Mohammed Imam, a former chairman of the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) who defected to the PDP alongside former Governor Ali Modu Sheriff and others. Details of the court papers have not been made public but an official of the PDP, who did not want to be named, confirmed the development. “Yes, Gambo Lawan has gone to court,” the source said, adding: “This is all I can tell you for now because the issue is now sub-judice. It is left for the court to decide who the rightful candidate of the PDP in Borno State is.” However, another official said Lawan rushed in taking the party to the court, pointing out that “he did not exhaust the channels available for him within the party.” A group, Borno Coalition for Good Governance, Monday, advised Lawan to seek redress in court. In a statement issued by its chairman, Modu Wulgo and secretary, John Ndirbula, the group had urged Lawan “ to head to court and right this wrong as this cannot stand in any court of law or in any party that has respect for internal democracy and party stakeholders.”
