Borrowed from a friend whose statuses are locked down so only his own friends can see them: Two trends that have increased alarmingly over the last decade may be related: Combat troops are used for public policing in areas where they are actively at war. Police forces in America are being armed and deployed like combat troops. Neither force is appropriate for the new roles and tasks theyve been assuming, much less adequately trained. Martial law is incompatible with civilian rule and vice versa. Mixing the two cannot be a good idea, no matter how well intentioned. Combat troops cant police the people with whom theyre still at war. Police should not be at war with the people that theyre intended to protect and serve.
