Borrowed this from the library: Its a light read about different parenting styles around the world. Ive only done a quick scan of the book so far and theres a chapter on Asian parents and grades, of course. I wonder if theres this emphasis on grades because as a culture, we dont feel that people are intrinsically valuable--people prove their worth by getting good grades, making money, or doing something worthwhile. I grew up with the notion that useful people are either working or learning a new skill, and Ive given Layla the usefulness lecture as well, i.e. in order to make a difference in this world, you need to either be passionate about something, or be a good helper to others. Back to the book: I need to sit down and give it a chance, but already I prefer Bringing Up Bebe; I guess because that was a whole book devoted to a culture as opposed to just one chapter.
