Boss Bar Scenes in Films # 1 - Get Carter This film is great for many reasons, most of them little to do with the overblown plot and Caines performance. Newcastle itself is the star of the film, Mike Hodges capturing the city as it was being transformed in the early 70s. The sense of 60s optimism was now turning as ugly as the derelict old back to back street being demolished to make way for the urban dreams off architects and social planners. This early scene as Carter gets off the London train on his revenge mission and wanders into the nearest pub speaks volumes about how the north was portrayed in popular culture. Flats caps, hairy thugs, suspicious looks, brawling hags. As a kid the most vivid memory I have of GC was Britt Ekland having a phone girl wank and, for its time, the film was more cynical and bleak about the corrupt world of gangsters, politicians and their pals who pocketed millions in the rebuilding of cities during the 60s and 70s. Pubs like this no longer exist, just as Newcastle and gangsters have evolved over time. Ahm there;s a lot of sentimentality for the good old bad old days but lets not get dewy eyed for damp rotted, freezing terraces, smoke filled pubs serving gut rot weak piss and romanticised Cockney wideboys in flash suits. Soon, wed be living in high rises, on smack and being bullied by stedheads in trackys.
