Both Danny and I find at times that we start to get discouraged. - TopicsExpress

Both Danny and I find at times that we start to get discouraged. We either get bogged down in the daily grind or our minds race ahead and start to envision the worst, but that is not the life that God calls us to. Danny started his fourth round of chemo today. After this round is completed, he will have a PET Scan. The results of that scan will determine what happens next in terms of treatment. It’s tempting to be anxious, to play the “what if” game. I read some things recently that have helped me. In an essay on attitude, Chuck Swindoll wrote, “We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude... I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it. . . we are in charge of our attitudes.” Central to that attitude is what we decide to focus on. Satan slinks around planting thoughts in our mind, trying to get us to fear, then be discouraged, then eventually give up. But Psalm 37:1-9 points out some important actions that will keep us from fretting: Trust, Do good, Delight, Commit, Rest. The last two caught my eye. v. 5: Commit thy way unto the Lord: trust in Him; and He shall bring it to pass. The Hebrew word translated “commit” means to “roll over on , hand over.” God carries our burdens, but we have to let go of them and hand them over to Him. v.7: Rest in the Lord and wait patiently for Him. In the margin of my Bible, I have written, God is not hurried by our worrying. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul. Psalm 23:2-3a We don’t know what will happen tomorrow, but we know Who holds tomorrow—and that is enough. From Danny: Each and every day I receive encouragement through a phone call, a card in the mail, a text, an email or a post on this Facebook page. Your prayers, support and concern are humbling and appreciated. You help to lift my spirits when discouragement tries to overwhelm me. Thank you for caring and letting me know that you are behind me.
