Both my SENIOR CITIZEN and my COVER CHALLENGE post for today: Backwater Blues by LaVern Baker was a feature track from her album LaVern Baker Sings Bessie Smith, released on Atlantic Records in January 1958. The album features Baker, known up to this point only as an R&B rocker, singing the songs of THE great blues shouter of the 1920s, and back by some great musicians of the 1950s jazz combo world, all paying tribute to one of their early musical influences. This album is full of extraordinary tracks, not a clunker on it. Baker (wisely) doesnt try to imitate Ms. Bessie, but provides her own unique, strong delivery, and the arrangers keep everything uptempo and swinging. Players include Buck Clayton, Nat Pierce, Paul Quinichette, Joe Marshall and Vic Dickinson. youtube/watch?v=3UncLG974pQ
