Both my parents were born in October. Ive always had trouble remembering whether it was the 3rd and the 26th, or the 6th and the 23rd, and which belong to my Dad (James E.) and my Mom (Bertha T.). So, I googled James E Duffy obit 1989 (the year of his death). It appears the Internet knows that my Dad was born on October 3rd, 1909 (clearly the result of some Christmas or New Years celebration). He would have been 105 this year, but he died just shy of 80 in August, 1989. The main problem with a dead parent is that you cant ask them the questions that finally become relevant to you after theyre gone. Every time I see a greasy part from an engine, I think about how he would clean them up with some gasoline -- he loved to putter with things. Funny what sticks with you from your childhood. Mostly, I wish hed lived to see his grandchildren. So, happy belated 105th, Dad. Hope youre drinking a cold beer, wherever you are.
