Box City 2014: More than 100 people get cold to focus attention on the homeless November 9, 2014 By JENNIFER COOPER (jcooper@sungazette), Williamsport Sun-Gazette Temperatures dropped to 28 degrees Friday night, according to the National Weather Service, but that didnt keep over 100 people, including one Sun-Gazette reporter, from sleeping outside for 12 hours using nothing but cardboard boxes as shelter. In an attempt to raise awareness of the local homelessness problem and raise funds for American Rescue Workers Saving Grace Shelter, participants brought broken down boxes large enough to fit in and built their homes with duct tape, assembling Box City 2014. From 6 p.m. to 6 a.m., Lycoming Colleges intramural field was home to students, teachers, church members and other volunteers, listening to music provided by a DJ, enjoying snacks and just trying to stay warm. We moved the event up a couple weeks this year so it wouldnt be as cold as last year, Dawn Astin, co-commanding officer of American Rescue Workers, said. But now its just as cold as it was Nov. 22 last year. Despite below freezing temperatures, Astin said the number of participants this year was triple those of a year ago.
