Boxing Day, not Xmas, Disney Countdown NO. 1!!: “Part of Your World” from The Little Mermaid I think it’s hardly surprising that the Disney song oeuvre has such a big gay following. Roughly a third of their songs are nose-pressed-against-the-window aspirational ‘I wish’ songs. A recent strain mines the whole ‘WHY WON’T THEY ACCEPT ME AS I AM…oh well…sod ‘em, then’ subgenre of self-empowerment songs. And then dont forget the fearsome host of drag queens slithering around singing evil villain songs. ‘Part of Your World’ is the ultimate example of the first group. I like to read it as an anti-consumerist rant where the heroine realizes that all the oozits, whatsits and thingummybobs in the world mean nothing if you haven’t got the one thing that will bring you true happiness…legs. Yes, that’s right, LEGS. I’ve always fancied wings myself, but Aerial is here to remind me that I’m not actually a relatively unevolved sea creature and that I should be grateful for what I’ve got. And running and dancing are pretty great aren’t they? Yay! I used to have an Aerial/Prince Eric snowglobe that played a music box version of this song but it sprung a leak.
