Boxing Fans !!! Coming soon.....Manny Pacquiao back in the ring.... The MGM Grand in Las Vegas will be scene for the next fight as Pacquiao faces up to Bradley on 12th April....read what the guru of boxing, and a Las Vegas resident himself, Howie Reed has to say about the upcoming battle and some other boxing insights...hes the man who knows !!! THE SQUARE RING April 2014 By James Wellington Jeeves III VISIT keepboxing & Phuket Brookies Sports Bureau This edition of The Square Ring comes from the road in Pattaya Beach Thailand on the way to Angeles City Philippines to cover the Pacquiao-Bradley rematch on April 12. The fights is Las Vegas ? “Well this is another fine mess you’ve gotten me into James Wellington Jeeves.” With few fights gaining any wide spread attention the press and TV sometimes make mountains out of mole hills much like pole dancer’s everywhere. That was certainly the case when Canelo Alvarez stopped Angulo. TSR and a couple of boxing experts gave a big “well done” to referee Tony Weeks ignoring the comments of the Showtime TV crew. Manager/trainer Bill Major points out that Angulo’s corner did him no favors.“ I’d of stopped that fight 2 rds earlier if i was the chief second. i love angulo but he wasn’t gonna finish ,why get him killed.” A quality boxing referee concurs, “ We must have the same Rx on glasses...we saw the same things. Tony Weeks was spot-on!”. Nice to be able to toss out a “Atta boy” to a referee. Danny Garcia’s sup par performance against Herrera brought out the excuse that “Garcia is a good fighter but I believe the Going Home thing made him lose focus.” The Going Home is a reference to his fighting in his parents homeland of Puerto Rico. That’s “Bushwa” and pure opinion but like ears everyone has a couple. Except van Gough who ran out of girlfriends before he ran out of ears. The decision giving Garcia the win bought out the Lord of the Manor’s tale of covering a match many years ago in Thailand. Sir Frog recounted similar personal experiences. “ I did 9 fights in Thailand which won 8 by KO and lost one cause I didn’t KOd him, they won’t loose to a farang on points in their own country, no loosing face it’s called.” Same-Same Puerto Rico. Rock’N Roll Rick took exception to the TSR comments. “You need to stop listening to Al I Have To Score Even Rounds In Every Fight Bernstein & Co., when watching these Showtime cards. If the numbers of landed punches are close to the correct Herrera did cause all kinds of problems for Danny. He tried to steal the fight with a style that is not judge friendly in 2014. I always had the feeling that Herrera’s tactics of hit & hold, touch & run, werent going to do him any favors with the judges. The fight was close and Im not saying Garcia should have won, but get the sense that Herreras punches had very little on them. It was a close fight, and putting more credence on power shots, the decision should not be a surprise.” Then R’N Roll lands a haymaker on the Lord of the Manor. “Let’s not get carrying away with writing about dodgy decisions, after all, you wear two hats in boxing. One as a writer and two as a judge, and after HK I have always considered you a better judge.” Translation ? You write “dodgy”. One of the advantages with being on the road is connecting with boxing fans. Had the occasion to chat with lanky Brit Chaz owner-manager of Legends Pool and Sports Bar in Pattaya Beach. Chaz from the Motha Country, that would be England, is a great boxing fan having grown up in the same town as former champ Terry Marsh. Marsh, known as the Fighting Fireman, was a good boxer building a 16-0 record with 10KO’s. He held the IBF Light Welter Title but when it was revealed he suffered from a form of epilepsy he was disqualified and forced to retire. The Marsh saga took another unlikely turn. On 30 November 1989, promoter Frank Warren was shot outside the Broadway Theatre in Barking by an unknown assailant wearing a balaclava who was never caught. A .22 bullet from a Lugar missed Warrens heart by an inch. The report that the bullet missed Warrens Heart came as a great surprise most didn’t think he had one. Terry Marsh, who had become Warrens first world champion two years earlier, was accused of the shooting but later acquitted by a jury. Before being exonerated Marsh would spend 10 months in the “Old Nick”. At the time many thought that Marsh was being “Oswalded” and it was some of Warrens “dodgy friends” what did the deed. Sir Sid Silk pass’s on the word that Warren’s arch enemy promoter Mickey Duff has passed on. They were the Bob Arum and Don King of England with little or no love lost between the two. Now to the rematch between Pacquiao-Bradley on April 12th. TSR will be the guest of Rock’N Roll Rick for this one. The Vegas odds favor Pacquiao by forcing the punters to bet $2.10 to win a dollar. If you like taking odds a $1.00 bet on Bradley returns $1.80. Their first fight went to a decision for Bradley. That result sent “shockwaves” through boxing which have been pretty much ignored. Two judges had it 115-113 for Bradley while one had it 115-113 for Pacquiao. Those are the only 3 people on the universe that didn’t see an easy Pacquiao win. Bradley’s next two wins also raised some eyebrows as in both he could have come out on the low end of the scorecards. Against Ruslan Provodnikov (22-0) Bradley was out on his feet in the 12th and rocked in the 11th but still got the “W”. Against Juan Manuel Marquez he got a SD which caused the Mexican to whine but then that’s what he does best. Pacquiao has only a decisive UD win over Brandon Rios in Macau where a KO was there for the taking. Pacquiao trainer Freddie Roach sometimes talks when he should be listening. Then again it’s sometimes best to listen when he talks. When Bradley’s said “Manny doesn’t have the hunger anymore and it’s never coming back. Manny no longer has his killer instinct,” Roach’s answer was immediate. “That tells me that Bradley is still suffering from the concussion Provodnikov laid on him.” We’re with Freddie on this one. Bradley is talking nonsense. Pacquiao knows what being poor is and he likes rich better. Pacquiao will not let up on Bradley. A KO maybe. Crack a Corona and fire up a nice cigar to prepare for a good old-fashioned “ass kicking”.
