You can remove the hashtags if in a formal capacity) Assalaahmualaykum/Hi As you may already be aware, the situation of the Palestinian people enforced onto them by the Israeli regime both in Gaza and the Wesr Bank is extremely distressing. The Palestinian people are treated as second class citizens in their own land by means of systematic intimidation, violence and modern. The seige that currently envelopes the Gaza strip collectively punishes an entire refugee population for voting in a certain democratic party. The access of basic energy supplies, food and medicine is heavily restricted. Every so often, tensions flare up in this region and Israel indiscriminately kill many civilians mainly consisting of innocent women and children. The Israeli regime are allowed to carry out such humanitarian atrocities as the world turns a blind eye. Not enough is being done by foreign governments around the world to stop this unbearable atrocity. As pharmacy directors, we have the ability to put some measure of pressure to stop this from continuing. As you are already full aware, TEVA pharmaceutical products are a big part of pharmacy. TEVA is an Israeli pharmaceutical manufacturing company. They are one of the major generic medicines manufacturers and exporters in the world. Globally, TEVA is the worlds leading generic drug maker, with a range of more than 1,000 molecules, with a presence in around 60 countries. TEVA currently employs approximately 45,000 people around the world and reached $20.3 billion in net revenues in 2013. TEVA supply more packs of medicine to the NHS each year than anyone else – thats around 15% of total packs of medicine in the UK. Millions of patients use their medicines. They estimate that, on average, every second of every day, over 250 tablets or capsules supplied by them are taken by patients all around the UK. Is boycotting effective? Whilst it is correct in stating that the US administration send a lot of military aid to Israel and many other corporate companies around the world have Zionist directors who donate large chunks of their profits to the Zionist cause, Israel depends on its strong economy to sustain its high expenditure on the military. Israel is unlike many other states in that the whole economy is pretty much in place to purely serve their military interests. This is why they are extremely concerned with the growing momentum of the worldwide BDS movement. TEVA is one of Israels main contributors to its economy which funds the Israeli Defense Force. TEVA paid the state of Israel $565M last year in taxes accrued from 2005. The Israeli Defense Force expenditure accounted for 5.5% of Israels GDP which is about $16.5 Yes, by boycotting this company it does mean that well probably have to buy more expensive generic medicines here. The best example I can give you is that instead of going to for example Lidl, were going to have to shop Tesco. We can get the same medication from another company in 95% of the cases. I understand that if this boycott catches on worldwide, there will be an *initial* shortage of generic medication due to the inbalance of people deciding to boycott TEVA and going with the alternatives (which are many), but these other alternative companies will seize on this opportunity and start manufacturing more as is the nature of economics. The boycott in itself wont change so much on its own, but it will have a significant blow to the economy. We do also require concurrent boycotts, international diplomatic pressure to be put on Israel etc but high level boycotts have historically shown governments that they need to take the sentiments of their people seriously which (inshaAllah) could mean the governments attitude to Israel changes too. Since we launched the campaign to #BoycottTEVA earlier yesterday, over 100 pharmacies nationwide have joined the boycott. We are anticipating many more to follow suit from the snippets of news that is trickling in. The pharmacies who have joined are mainly privately owned multiples or independent pharmacies at the moment. I would also add a slight caveat in that some pharmacies may still stock certain lines of TEVA products out of necessity due to one or more reasons such as a lack of alternative or patient preference. We aim for this to be absolutely minimal via education and recommendation of alternatives. We hope to put a multilayered campaign together highlighting this ethical dilemma to: 1) Patients 2) Pharmacists & Pharmacies 3) Wholesale distributers who supply pharmacies 4) GPs 5) CCG medicines management groups (decide on prescribing formulary/budgets) 6) The Pharmacy Defense Association (PDA) which campaign on the behalf of Pharmacist 7) The Local Pharmaceutical Commission (LPC) who bid for pharmaceutical services and interests on behalf of pharmacists. 8) The General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) which is the regulatory authority for Pharmacists. I ask you to show solidarity joining this nationwide boycott. Say no to #StateTerrorism #SayNoToApartheid #SayNoToWarCrimes
