Boys varsity soccer plays an outstanding game to beat Miami Country Day For the past two seasons, the boys varsity soccer team has struggled to get a win over cross town rivals Miami Country Day, who are always extremely well coached and have a talented pool of club players. However, this game the Falcons dominated the Spartans from the opening kickoff, and played their best soccer of the season thus far. They Falcons used great combination play and the width of the field to create chance after chance for both their forwards and the midfielders. And, at the same time played such solid in defense that the Spartans didn’t challenge senior goalkeeper, Daniel du Feu, except on a couple of shots. Although the Falcons had several early chances to score, it wasn’t until the 15th minute that they put one on the scoreboard. Senior, Alejandro Martinez-Oletta, received a terrific pass out of the midfield, carried the ball down the right hand side, beat a defender, and found classmate Alejandro Rodriguez-Santilli. Santilli in turn beat a player himself on the top of the box, dribble the ball another five yards, then turned and struck a hard low shot to the Spartan keeper’s right, giving him no chance. The Falcons would continue to attack for the next twenty minutes, but were unable to add to their tally due to some near misses, but also so great goalkeeping by the Spartans’ keeper. Then they broke their short scoring drought and added a second goal. Senior, Nicolas Moscoso, won a tough challenge deep in his own half, dribbled the ball two steps, then looking up saw Santilli in an one on one just over the half way line. Moscoso struck the perfect pass putting the ball just ahead of Santilli, who battled the defender brilliantly, working his way towards the box. Then still under pressure, he struck the ball as he reached the eighteen, tucking it neatly in the corner. A third goal for the Falcons would come just two minutes later, started and finished by junior, Claudio Wingartz. Wingartz picked up a loose ball in the midfield, made a run down the middle, and then pushed it wide to Martinez-Oletta. He took it to the touch line and crossed a deep ball to the back post. Meanwhile, Wingartz who had continued his run, brought the ball down from the cross, beat the defender, an hammered the ball into the side netting of the far post. The scoreboard now read, 3-0 at the half. Second half, the Falcons took the field again with the same tenacity and attacking form that they finished the first 40 minutes with, and it took them just 14 minutes to add their fourth and final goal. Wingartz on another run, crossed the ball and found sophomore, Vitor Pagano, who beat one player, found himself in a little bit of space, and shot the ball cleanly past the helpless keeper. PTS would not score again, though they continued to make chances they we either turned away by the Spartans keeper, or that did not hit the target. The Spartans scored a late goal to make the final score 4-1. The Falcons now stand at 3-1-1 and play again Friday at home in a district game against Marathon. Come out and watch them play.
