Brace yourself because Louis van Gaal is expected to make another sweeping clearance of players this summer in a bid to rid the team of under-performing or players-who-are-always-in-the-sick-bed! Players with 18 months or less in their contracts are most vulnerable, while Falcao - who is on loan - is the most uncertain. Players Van Gaal is keen to retain: LVG is keen and confident that he will retain De Gea. However, if the worst happens, Victor Valdes is also in the team and falls in the category of those players with under 18-months left in their contract and you can now appreciate the wisdom of having competition for DDG, even if it comes to the wire, then there is no harm with having a super goal at United. Players who may not be retained based on Van Gaals not so subtle hints. 1. Van Gaal has cast doubt over Falcaos future at United due to his [Falcao] difficulty to adjust to the tempo of English football. Falcao is costing United £16m in signing fee and salary, has so far not produced his previous records. Hampered by injury since arriving in September, hes scored only three goals and made 7 starts in the Premier League in a total of 634 minutes’ game time. As he has suffered three serious knee injuries during his career – the last of which occurred in January last year and ruled him out of the World Cup – the player’s condition is also being monitored. His future is most uncertain. 2. Van Gaal has doubts about Da Silva’s defensive and fitness qualities and is concerned at the frequent injury problems that continue to hamper the progress of Evans, Smalling and Jones. Even before Van Gaal, long into the days of SAF, these four players have always had a fitness problem - but were covered by the presence of Vidic, Evra and Rio. For such young players whove never stabilised, Van Gaal may choose to release them in order to cultivate a new stock of defensive players - on that note, Paddy McNair is a shoe-in for a new contract. 3. Van Persie! Yes. The Flying Dutchman is heading to the ripe age of 32 and LVG will have to stick to the United tradition of giving a 1- year contract extension to all players over 30. Van Gaals targets for January: Van Gaal is focusing on strengthening the squad and is targeting a right-back, central defender and central midfielder. This means that Da Silva and at least one of Evans, Smalling, and Jones are vulnerable. It also means that Tom Cleverley, who is on loan at Aston Villa, will almost certainly be released in the summer. Van Gaal is targeting Everton’s Seamus Coleman, Southampton’s Nathaniel Clyne and Barcelona’s Dani Alves for his first choice right- back. He is also targeting Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels at centre-back and Kevin Strootman in central midfield.
