Bradenton Herald School News DELANEY LEADERSHIP ACADEMY RETURNS TO BAYSHORE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Bob Delaney, former National Basketball Association referee and law enforcement officer, will speak to Bayshore Elementarys Delaney Leadership Academy at 2 p.m. Thursday. The Delaney Leadership Academy is for Bayshore Elementary fifth-graders. The six-year program focuses on fostering positive leadership qualities before students transition into middle school. Speech and essay contest for Manatee students The Palmetto Youth Center essay and speech contest is open to all middle and high school students in the Manatee County School District. Students will be asked to reflect on this years 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.s I Have a Dream speech. In essays and speeches, students must answer the prompt: Do you believe todays youth truly understands the importance of the civil rights movement? The essay submission date is Dec. 6, and finalists will be notified Jan. 1. Oral presentation finals are Jan. 9, and the banquet for finalists is Jan. 17. PALMETTO HIGH SENIOR SPEAKS AS FLORIDA EDUCATION CONFERENCE Ezekiel Hillery, a senior at Palmetto High School, spoke at a Florida Department of Education Conference in Orlando about Project Lead the Way Biomedical Science program at PHS. The program was funded through a Race to the Top Grant. Hillery spoke to educators, superintendents and school board members across Florida about the positive impact of the program. VETERANS DAY CEREMONY AT BRADEN RIVER MIDDLE A Veterans Day ceremony is set 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Braden River Middle School. School Board member and Vietnam veteran Dave Miner will speak, and the Braden River Middle School band, choral and orchestra students will perform. The school also plans to unveil this years Tribute Tile honoring those who have served. There will be a breakfast for visiting veterans in the schools media center. Information: Joanne Torlucci at 941-751-7080, ext. 2031 MANATEE NUTRITIION DIRECTOR RECEIVES NATIONAL AWARD Sandra Ford, Manatee County School District food and nutrition director, was named the Golden School Foodservice Director of the Year by the Foodservice Achievement Management Excellence. The national award is given annually to one school nutrition professional for raising industry standards. Ford spent the last nine years developing the child nutrition program, increasing lunch participation 14 percent and breakfast intake 18 percent. In October, Ford introduced School Lunch Across the USA, to educate students about different states produce and signature cuisine. Fords award, along with the silver awards, will be presented Jan. 12 at the Rusty Pelican in Key Biscayne during the School Nutrition Industry Conference.
