Brandeis Fencing competed in the NE Fall Collegiate (Big One) - TopicsExpress

Brandeis Fencing competed in the NE Fall Collegiate (Big One) yesterday, and did well, with 11 finalists in the six events. Twenty-one schools participated with about 60-70 fencers per event. Brandeis entered 35 fencers. Mens saber was our big winner as we took first (Adam Mandel 15) second Jess Ochs -Willard15 and third (Kyle Berney 18), along with freshman Curtis Bishop at 16th. Mens foil was close behind with three finalists as seniors Noah Berman and Ethan Levy took second and third, with soph Len Grazian in 7th in a strong field. Promising newcomer Guillo Narvaez finished 10th. Mens and womens epee showed great balance. Justin Kwon 16 took a strong 8th, losing to the champion, with teammates at 10 (Hunter Stusnick 18) , 14 (Max Gould18), 15 (Tom Hearne 16) and 16 (Albert Reiss 17). The women missed the final but placed 11 (Gwen Mowell16), 12(Shayna Lyandvert 18) ,13 (Liz Feller 18) and 18 (Vanessa Fong 18). Womens foil placed two in the finals, with captain Caroline Mattos 16 earning the silver and freshman Boots Xue taking 8th. Chaya Schapiro 17 and Emilia Dwyer 16 followed at 13 and 14. This years team is interesting in a few ways. We welcome three international fencers, one each from Mexico City, Hong Kong and Beijing. The only senior on the womens team is saber fencer Jessie Kirshner. The men have four seniors, all of whom made the top three places at the Big One. Five new mens epee fencers joined us this fall. All are from New Jersey and four from Espada FC. Three juniors will return to the womens team in January after a semester abroad. We give many thanks to team parents who provided great food and support. All alums are invited to our home multi-meet on Sunday Dec. 7. 9-4 in the Gosman Center. Or come to MIT on Nov. 15 at the Indoor Track for our first Northeast Conference meet of the season.
