Bravo, Q Center! I am so proud to have been part of an organization for so many years that actually believes in the diversity and validity of all LGBTQ lived experiences, and is willing to take hits from people who may disagree, in an effort to protect that safe space for ALL members of our communities. It is not Q Center practice, nor is it the practice of our staff members, to police the way community members conceive of their own identities or to dictate that one trans person’s narrative is more valid or correct than another’s. New Narratives is a group of trans women who held a closed meeting to discuss the ways that they articulate their own trans experiences and identities, and to discuss and organize around a trans narrative that they were not encountering elsewhere. Our mission at Q Center is to provide, “a safe space to support and celebrate LGBTQ diversity, equity, visibility and community building.” With this in mind, New Narratives members represent part of the array of narratives and experiences that trans individuals have; that is, they add to the diversity of the LGBTQ community and should be able to build community here at Q Center.
