Bravo, Simmons, Sammy confirmed for ‘Single Wicket’ By Roger Seepersad Caribbean Premier League Twenty20 stars Dwayne Bravo, Andre Russell, Lendl Simmons, Darren Sammy and Dwayne Smith have all been confirmed to be part of the 2013 Caribbean Single Wicket tournament, which will be held at Sir Frank Worrell Ground, UWI St Augustine on October 13. The tournament, which is being held to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Caricom, will include 12 all-rounders from around the Caribbean battling it out for bragging rights and a winner take all jackpot of US$3,000. It is the second such tournament being organised by Glory Entertainment, the first taking place in 2009, with Simmons emerging as champion. While the tournament did not take off in 2009, representative from Glory Entertainment Andre Phillips is hoping that this year will be a success as they try to attract partners to make the tournament an annual event. Carib will sponsor this year’s competition, but the organisers are still working out details of that sponsorship. The cost to stage the tournament is approximately US$ 250,000, Phillips said. At the official launch of the tournament at Carib Brewery Compound in Champs Fleurs yesterday, tournament director William Wallace confirmed that Bravo, Simmons, Sammy, Russell and Smith have all committed themselves to being part of the competition. He is hoping to add West Indies power hitters Kieron Pollard and Chris Gayle to that list. The tournament will see 12 all-rounders divided into four groups of three with the winners of each group moving into the semi-finals. The matches will be a one-on-one contest between two players. Each player will bowl two overs against his opponent, with the all-rounder scoring more runs winning the encounter. When batting, the all-rounder will be partnered by a non-striking runner, while the bowler will be supported by neutral fielders. If the batsman is out three times, his innings is closed, with three runs being deducted from his total score for each dismissal. In addition to the cricket, there will be other attractions for fans, including live performances by guest artistes. Tickets for the tournament went on sale yesterday at Cellular Planet outlets nationwide at a cost of $60.
