Brazilian born and Barcelona FC defender Daniel Alves may neither have the pace nor swiftness of either Ronaldo or Messi but he has won the hearts of soccer loving fans and indeed all men of goodwill when two weeks ago he went bananas by eating the racism thrown at him by one of Villarreal FC fans. The fan, who wanted to make a racist caricature of Alves by throwing a banana at him which translates to calling him a monkey, got more than he bargained for when Daniel who was about to take a corner kick calmly picked the banana, peeled it, took a big bite, threw the peels away, wiped his hands on his shorts and proceeded to take the corner kick, a move which won him admiration and applause from even Villarreal fans. Since then, Daniel Alves has been trending on both print and electronic media and his and other sport celebrities selfies have gone viral on the various social media sites. Thats the way to go Daniel my brother and I am sure the racist who threw the insult at you may not even be worthy to untie your shoe laces. Nyemar Jr, Daniels fellow Brazilian and teammate at Barcelona added a new twist to the drama when he tweeted, We are all monkeys and so what? Ask them. One thing for sure is that they can never be like us. Let them continue to simmer in their hatred while we continue to blaze the trail. But what I really dont understand is why a Spaniard should call a Brazilian a monkey, Is Spain better than Brazil? As the dust raised at Villarreal was yet to settle, another unfortunate and bigger dust was raised in the US when the owner of the Los Angeles Clippers, Douglas Sterling was quoted as telling his girlfriend to stop appearing with black people in social media photos and not to bring black people including NBA hall of famer Magic Johnson to his basket ball games. I know Douglas who is a known racist has bitten more than he can chew this time and must be covered with ugly soot from the dust he raised. A lot of people have already eaten him raw and he deserves more that what he is getting from the public. The NBA is a league that is beloved by fans all across the country. Its got an awful lot of African American players. Its steeped in African American culture. These egocentric whites need to be reminded again and again that America is where it is today because of the sweat, blood and sacrifices of our progenitors who were sold into slavery many years back. In the academia, entertainment industry, sports, fashion and other walks of life, it has always been a black mans world and so shall it be. I dont know why Whites should feel superior over Blacks, is it their colour, hair, freckles or what? If a black man who they taunt as monkey is the President of America, then those who a monkey rules must be stupid monkeys because in the land of the blind, the one eyed man is always the king. It is so unfortunate that we still hear of such plantation-era racist slurs in this modern age and until they are made to pay reparations for the evil of slave trade, they will never rein-in their racist tongues. For the records, civilization started in Africa and even Christ the saviour and redeemer of the world was squatted in Egypt! We are proud of who we are, our nature, our culture and our couture and no amount of idiotic racist rants can deflate our esoteric pride and heritage. Somebody should help me tell the Donald Sterlings and their ilk na igba isi ntuhi awudii ya wu iwu onye ocha.
