Chances are when you think of Brazil the first things that come to mind all originated in the favelas. The favelas of Rio de Janeiro began a rapid, and controversial, transition in 2008 in an effort to improve public security called pacification. Pacification meant removing local drug gangs from power, replacing them with municipal police forces and providing more social support and programs for residents.
