Bread prices hiked by 50 paisa Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution (CAPD) Department Thursday increased the bread prices by 50 paisa ending its ‘tussle’ with bread makers. The bread makers have been demanding the hike in the prices of the bread for over seven months due to the increase in the flour prices. The rates of baked Chut, Chachwaroo and Lawasa weighing 48 grams have been hiked from Rs 2.5 to Rs 3.While as prices of 80 grams of baked Chut, Chachwaroo and Lawasa have been fixed as Rs 5.The order has been issued by director CAPD, Mir Mushtaq Ahmad under order Number: DCAPDK/S (PC) 2013/119/848. 60.Meanwhile Valley Citizens’ Counsel termed the hike in the bread prices as ‘unjustified’.The Counsel Chairman Zarief Ahmad Zarief asked government to consult general public before effecting hike in the prices of essential commodities. “This is the second hike on the bread prices in a year only. We are not against the price hike but it must be done after the proper consultation from public and citizens of the land,” he said.He said that CAPD and other concerning government agencies have failed to monitor the quality and weight of the bread in the market.VCC said that bread makers sell the bread below 30 grams and department has failed to curb these sellers. “There should be proper monitoring and regular checking squads which will keep an eye on the bread makers,” he said.VCC also suggested government to form a public advisory committee for the price control system in the valley. However General Secretary Valley Bread Makers Association Bilal Ahmad Sofi said that there has been ‘steep’ hike in the flour prices from past one year. “We have been demanding the hike in bread prices for last seven months which was finally accepted today,” said Sofi.Sofi said in case there is deduction in the flour prices, the bread makers would also decrease bread prices.Meanwhile, CAPD in its order has also directed that bread shop owners to display a new rate list at their shops.
