Elliot Arthur & Janet Crawford Baines felidae Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Science Center at Tiger Creek Wildlife Refuge Elliot Baines had a very simple philosophy when it came to giving. “He used to always say, ‘What good does that money do sitting in the bank?’” said Janet Crawford Baines, his wife. “That money would always give someone or some organization a much-needed boost at a time when they needed it most. That was exactly what he wanted it to do.” Janet Baines provided the seed grant in honor of her husband Elliot to establish the center at Tiger Creek and continues her support for the organization. ELLIOT ARTHUR BAINES Elliot A. Baines, long-time resident of Woodbridge, Connecticut, and Vero Beach, Florida, died on September 27, 2007, at the Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne Florida. He was 87 years old. Mr. Baines was born on August 28, 1920 in Suffern, New York, the son of Elizabeth (Elliot) and Dr. Fred A. Baines. Mr Baines grew up in White Plains, NY and graduated in 1943 from Middlebury College in Vermont where he majored in chemistry and geology. At Middlebury he was active in the Mountain Club and served as chairman of the Winter Carnival. He was a member of Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity and the Blue key Honor Society. Mr. Baines served in the Naval Reserve during World War II. He was the Executive Officer on a mine sweeper and served in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. He survived the sinking of his ship in Manila Harbor, The Philippines, on Valentines Day 1945, for which he was awarded the Purple Heart. After the war he pursued graduate studies in metallurgical engineering at Stevens Institute of Technology in New Jersey. He built a career around the brass forging business, first working for Scovill Manufacturing Ca, in Waterbury. Connecticut, and later as National Sales Manager for the Bridgeport Brass Co. Mr. Baines resided in Woodbridge, Connecticut for over 25 years. He was a member of the New Haven Country Club and the Woodbridge Club, He was a long-time. summer resident and served as president of the Candlewood Lake Club, in Brookfield, Connecticut. Following his retirement he lived in Boca Raton, Florida. and then in Vero Beach. He was a member of the Johns Island Club for over twenty years. He devoted much of his time to supporting many charitable organizations. Among his more significant work was serving on the Board of Trustees of the Eaglebrook School in Deerfield, Massachusetts, where he was named the first lifetime board member and where a dormitory is dedicated in his honor. He also served on the Board of Trustees of the Aloha Foundation of Fairlee, Vermont. An energetic, caring man, his philanthropy covered many fields, including education, medicine, religion, and the arts. He funded the establishment of the Baines Family Scholarship at the Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, Connecticut. The geology teaching laboratory in Bicentennial Hall at Middlebury College and a reading lounge of the Thomas Library at Wittenburg University in Springfield, Ohio, are named in his honor. He was named to be awarded the 2007 Lifetime Philanthropic Leadership Award, given by the Indian River County chapter of the Association of Fund Raising Professionals. In Vero Beach he was a Deacon of the First Presbyterian Church and a member of the Museum of Art, the Humane Society, Mckee Botanical Gardens, the Scottish Society, and the Navy League. He is survived by his wife of nine years, Janet. His first wife. Martha, predeceased him. He is survived by four Sons: David E. Baines and wife Susan of Naples, Florida; Barry A. Baines and wife the Reverend Dr. Kathryn Of Westborough, Massachusetts; Dr Kevin H. Baines and wife Jenine of La Canada, California; Elliot A. Baines Jr. and wife Linda of Naperville, Illinois. He is also survived by ten grandchildren and one great- grandchild. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM October 2, 2007 at the First Presbyterian Church in Vero Beach, with the Reverend Dr. G. Timothy Womack officiating.
