Breaking News: Verizon Wireless is retreating from plans to install a new cell tower near Whiteside Mountain near Cashiers. The Planning Board was set to hold a hearing Thursday about the new tower; residents in the affluent area have been vocal in their disapproval. In an effort to appease critics, Verizon had agreed to disguise the tower as a tree. Now thats off, too. Here is the statement from Verizons Karen Schultzt: After further evaluation of the requested changes to the tower in Jackson County, we have reached the conclusion that the modified plans would not accomplish the original intent of the tower at this location. We have therefore indefinitely suspended action on the development of this new site and will consider alternate plans in the future to meet the capacity needs of this area.
