Breaking news: The Israeli police have reportedly made initial arrests in connection with the barbarous murder of a Palestinian teenager in apparent response to the equally barbarous murder of three Israeli teenagers. Suspicions seem to be confirmed that the act was perpetrated by Israeli extremists. If this turns out to be the case, the extremists will find themselves roundly condemned and rejected by Israeli society in spite of the miniscule few who will think and act otherwise. They and the rioters in Israeli streets have done more damage to their cause than any Palestinian opposition could hope to impose. Voices in Israel are already being raised in sympathy with Palestinian grief, calling for peace and an end to the cycle of violence. What is missing is similar action and similar sentiment on the Palestinian side toward Israelis. Hamas commended the abductors and murderers of the three Israeli young men and the Palestinian street greeted the crime with glee. The Palestinian Authority has done little to find the murders and nothing to quell the violence in Palestinian streets. Quite to the contrary.
