Breaking news, from inside Mexico. @Laura Kelly - — It is fascinating to be here in the midst of what can only be described as a kind of cultural explosion taking place on the streets and on social media...having an impact that is yet to be seen but apparently isnt going away easily. Just as a brief description - to give an idea, public Universities are closed, the streets and plazas continue to be filled with demonstrators (surging on certain days) protesting in peaceful, steady, creative and very persistent energy. No one is not talking about this including on any street corner. There is a flood of videos, information, statements of solidarity like nothing Ive every seen flying through the social medias. People appear to have had it with the corruption, violence and collusion between the cartels and the government. Demands for Pena Nietos resignation are only growing. (still life goes on at the same time...magical realism?) One thing that is amazing to me is that is has remained non-violent...on the part of the demonstrators at least. and its been about two months now. The federal government has begun to use the technique of sending in infiltrators dressed as demonstrators to cause trouble giving them the trigger to get repressive. The demonstrators have used the technique of encircling them when this happens and chanting something that outs them and calling for non-violence. Now the troops have begun to just directly attack and arrest totally peaceful demonstrators, charging them with ridiculous serious crimes like terrorism, organized crime and attempted murder. The thing is, the demonstrators are everybody and it doesnt look like theyre stopping - including, students, professionals, academics, the poorest campesinos, middle class people etc. and this is being well documented with everyones cell phone and put immediately on social media sites. Pena Nieto (and really its the machine that put him there...not him) has his hands full indeed. Maybe there is such a thing as a tipping point.
