Breast-What-Awareness Month?? I went for a walk the other day and saw a woman wearing a shirt that said Breast Cancer. I thought,Why is she wearing those words?? Really, shouldnt the focus be on what we want instead of what we dont want? Every time millions of people say/see/read the words Breast Cancer, they validate it; they give it strength and power. Isnt it exactly the opposite of what we are trying to accomplish this month of October? I would never put on a shirt with Breast Cancer on it because this is NOT the message I want to send to my body, first of all. Second, this is NOT what I would want everyone to say about me as soon as they see me. I apologize for this unpleasant analogy, but to me its an equivalent of putting a sign Ugly on your forehead while walking around and trying to look all beautiful. Isnt it what we all want- be beautiful and healthy? Then why not choose beautiful and healthy words? To me, the words Breast Cancer Awareness are a cry of surrender, of giving up. These words are celebrating cancer, not fighting it. Why not name October a Healthy Breasts Awareness Month or something along those lines? I feel that would help us, women, re-own the control, power, and responsibility over our bodies rather than glorify the monster.
