Breastfeeding, like babywearing, is a combination of instinctive - TopicsExpress

Breastfeeding, like babywearing, is a combination of instinctive and learned behaviours. The learning normally happens as we grow up in our social village, by observing our siblings being fed, our cousins, friends babies. There arent many of these opportunities these days in Ireland and breastfeeding groups (yes, go while you are pregnant!) and antenatal breastfeeding classes (yes, ideally facilitated by someone who has experience feeding, adequate up-to-date training and a teaching qualification) can fill that gap, be some of that village. The instincts are there for mum, often burried under years of being told to ignore them and tons of modern advice. It can take time to filter through the fog, find them and have the courage to trust them. For baby, these instincts are strong but they may be hampered by birth interventions. This article is a lovely reminder of instincts and normal behaviour.
