Breath in, let go..... Being with 2 wonderful clients today has reminded me of our need to be consciously aware of the breath and the amazing health benefits it has, both mentally, emotionally and physically. My first client wanted to reduce the restriction/pain in the lower back from a fall and preceding operation to correct compression in the lower spine. When I assessed her breathing, it was up in her chest with hardly anything there! Inhalation and exhalation were so shallow that when I asked her to increase the depth of her breath it was with such an urgency the entire body tensed. And so we came to Tigers Breath. Laying on the flow face down, I asked her to breath into the belly as if it was a balloon and then gently release on exhale. The whole body tensed and the breath went to the shoulders. We spent 20 minutes on just breathing until it was a smooth consistent flow, with no tension. Tigers breath is great for lower back pain and digestive problems as it massages all the organs and spine. We then added this breath to movement, it allowed the client to realise how she had been holding the breath with walking, exercises and with everything in general and by combining steady breathing with movement, just how much easier life could be! My second client was also feeling chronic pain in the shoulder from a fall. I sensed a lot of trapped emotional energy as she came in, and guessed right as she was organising a church event and had a million and one things to do. And so we practiced Tigers Breath also, but this time taking the breath to the belly and then moving into the ribs to loosen the intercostal muscles which seemed to have a pull on her shoulder. After I felt she had relaxed, we went back to her fall and I asked her to express a word or feeling of how she felt - FROZEN! No wonder the shoulder was still in so much pain if her mind was retaining this feeling. Although painful, we sat with the thought and looked to change the state of the breath instead of burying said feeling and holding it in the body. There were tears, emotions and feelings released. But they were released from the body with the client feeling a lot lighter. Physical therapy neednt be the pain curdling massage weve come to expect. Sometimes simple nurturing with conscious awareness of the breath is all we need. X
