Bren and I had the unpleasant duty to visit a funeral home in Georgetown last night and on our way home we tuned to Sirius 58; Prime Country stars covering Christmas classics. I love the country music genre, new and old. Next to ‘real rock’ (50’s & 60’s) it’s my favorite listening category of music. Many of the country singers do an adequate performance on the hits we all remember. Although it’s a nice change of pace I heard very few that will turn classic gold anytime soon. I think Alan Jackson, Clint Black and Keith Urban (to name a few) are very talented and truly shine in the country sector but they are not Perry Como, Andy Williams and Nate King Cole on the Christmas landscape of crooners. Surprising Clay Walker does a fine job on Feliz Navidad but far from the Jose Feliciano rendition. And two of my favorites, Kenny Chesney and Willie Nelson come up short of Roy Obison (but who doesn’t) covering Pretty Paper. Now I didn’t hear anything by George Strait, if anyone could, he would be the one to pull it off. But perhaps I’m just old and won’t accept change and the youth of today will consider the new Christmas sound as the standard. Sad; it’s similar to those of not many years on this planet accepting Jim Carrey’s ‘How the Grinch stole Christmas’ as the classic. Even the 1946 version of ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ may be replaced in the eyes and hearts of this generation when recast with Steven Seagal, Rosie O’Donnell and George Clooney and Uncle Billy. Can’t wait. Of course there are exceptions to every rule. There are always exceptions. Silent Night with Clarkson, Yearwood and McEntire is as good as it gets. Take a moment to listen and youll agree.
