Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog The NFL world loves them some power rankings. So why not create a Jets coaching search power rankings to better illustrate the current dynamics going on in Florham Park? No? Too bad, I did it anyway. Agree or disagree? Let us know in the comments or vote in the poll at the bottom of the post! Keep an eye out for our GM power rankings tomorrow morning. USATSI_8258424_110579513_lowres1) Doug Marrone (Former HC Buffalo Bills) — Marrone and the Jets have gone through some ups and downs in the last few days. Marrone took an interview in Atlanta and then got slammed in the press shortly thereafter for bombing the interview in New York. Don’t believe it for a second. The Jets are serious about Marrone, but they seem to be hanging on to either (1) make the search look more exhaustive or to (2) hire their GM first. But just maybe (3) it is because the Jets are trying to secure … 2) Dan Quinn (DC Seattle Seahawks) — Marrone might be the top dog, but Quinn comes in second in the power rankings with a bullet. Quinn is considered one of the bright young minds in football; in fact Peter King tweeted an anonymous quote from a longtime exec (to me, it suspiciously looks like it came from Ron Wolf) about how good a candidate Quinn is. Quinn, hailing from Morristown, NJ, worked with the Jets back in 2007-08 and as a coach at Hofstra before that. Quinn’s team is still in the playoffs and might remain there for a while, delaying any hiring. Quinn has been coy and measured in the process, so a rather out of character behind-the-scenes storyline that emerged Thursday (that conveniently originates from a reporter based in Miami, the future job location of Quinn’s agent and former Jets GM) seems like as if it could be pure media manipulation. Either way, Quinn seems ready to become a head coach (just ask Trader Mike) and both sides could be quietly playing out the process due to league rules. USATSI_8297683_110579513_lowres3) Frank Reich (OC San Diego Chargers) — Yes, really! Reich’s work with Peyton Manning and Philip Rivers would play well to a team with real offensive questions. We’ve heard things with Reich went well enough and maybe should things fall apart with the top two guys, Reich would quickly rise to the top of the heap. Of the top three, Reich brings the best and most polished passing offensive acumen. Like Quinn, Reich has never been a head coach and would need a trusted lieutenant to run the other side of the ball. 4) Todd Bowles (DC Arizona Cardinals) — Bowles had his interview this week, but from what we can gather there wasn’t a lot of buzz about it after the fact. Bowles would be a competent head coach and brings prepared units to game day. While known for his impressive defensive schemes, Bowles might not have done enough to impress the search panel. USATSI_8266580_110579513_lowres5) Gary Kubiak (OC Baltimore Ravens) — The guy who has yet to interview with the team is a real wildcard. Kubiak has a proven offensive system, head coach experience and ties to some of the names on the GM side of the equation … most notably the man coming back for his second interview, Mike Maccagnan. Kubiak declined interviewing until his team’s postseason run is over. That might come as soon as this weekend when his team plays the Patriots. Kubiak could be in Florham Park in a few days and leapfrog some candidates. 6) Anthony Lynn (Assistant HC New York Jets) — Lynn was one of the team’s first interviews and the only in-house candidate. The meeting with the search panel was likely a courtesy to the team’s assistant head coach before sorting through a list of more compelling names. USATSI_8074203_110579513_lowres7) Tom Cable (Offensive Line Coach Seattle Seahawks) — I’m not sure the reasons Cable interviewed with the Jets, but he’s the least likely of the current NFL coaches to be the team’s next head coach. 8) Jim Mora (Head Coach UCLA) — Mora’s name has been mentioned in conjunction with the Jets, but either one or both sides have not agreed to even meet at this point. Even if they did, I don’t see Mora as a compelling candidate for the Jets.
