Brian Galebachs comments over in the NASPA group gave me an idea about altering the way prizes are distributed in small Collins events in the hopes of encouraging some newcomers to participate, especially the ones for whom prize money is more important. For my Princeton tournament this Sunday (if we get a quorum), and for my Cleveland tournament, Im going to thing about having a first prize that is less front-loaded so that I can offer every player a prize that has some proportion to her number of wins. I still think that first prize should win more, so I wouldnt go with straight proportionality, but I think I could find a halfway point. I have no idea if any newcomers would be enticed by this, but I am suggesting that it might be worth a try. Obviously you would not want to try this in a tournament that is oriented towards attracting heavyweights, but for smaller events that are trying to attract newcomers, this might be a worthwhile option.
