Brian OConnor is a twat and a Shite sports journalist. I left the following quote on the Irish Times sports page to eh.....express that opinion!! (Not expecting James Connors to agree with me about Rory but Id imagine hell agree with my sentiments about OConnors discussion of partition) Paper never refused ink....unfortunately so in Mr OConnors case. His own narrow world view permeates any of his articles its been my misfortune to read. He deliberately misinterprets the tepid response of the Irish sporting publics response to Rorys undoubted success. Partition was a tragic result of the British policy of colonisation in this country. Mr OConnor may surround himself with those who see Irishmen from north of the border as caricatures but happily i think most Irish sports people do not - particularly in GAA, rugby and boxing. It is telling that Mr OConnor views Irish history as mostly squalid yet he has the audacity to demand that Irish sports fans grab their nearest tricolour and show their patriotism for one of our own whenever Rory achieves success!! Ive had arguments with friends about golf - a sport about which Im largely ambivalent at best - but there is no doubting Rorys success. It is simply disingenuous to demand that Irish sports fans show their love for Rory when Rory himself has been largely ambivalent about Ireland. That is absolutely his prerogative. Hes a successful young man and bears no responsibility for waving any national flag. He has not courted the affections of the Irish sporting public to any great extent so why foist it upon him?? Barry McGuigan sought to straddle the border and the religious divide and he did so very successfully. He courted everybody and he got the adulation in return. Carl Frampton is following in those footsteps and the same approach is yielding the same dividends. Perhaps if Mr OConnor had any interest in sports other than the ponies and golf hed realise the inaccuracy of his pronouncements but im not expecting any change. Paddy Barnes (another caricature from up there??) made his position on Rory and the Olympics clear. Its nothing to do with politics, religion or partition much as Mr OConnor would like to shoehorn those issues into this debate as he castigates this squalid isle. Its about Rory himself and his public persona. It seems to me he doesnt want the messianic devotion of which Mr OConnor deems him worthy so leave him be. He seems happy enough and the Irish sporting public seem happy enough for him. Mr OConnor is trying to arrange a marriage that nobody wants!!! m.independent.ie/sport/golf/paddy-barnes-i-dont-want-to-see-mcilroy-represent-ireland-at-olympics-30365786.html
