Bridge builders have started concrete filling of a 320-meter pylon grillage on Russky Island.. February 26, 2010 Work on cable bridge M7 pylon basement construction on Russky Island is being finalized. Bridge builders have started first pour (section) concrete filling of the grillage. Its volume is about 9000 cubic meters. This is the most massive concrete laying operation since construction of a bridge crossing over Eastern Bosporus Strait began. The concrete mix is supplied from all four plants owned by USK MOST’s Vladivostok branch concurrently. – This is one of the most complicated and labor-intensive bridge construction stages on Russky Island, - Nikolay Rogov, USK MOST’s deputy general director and project manager, emphasized. – The first pour concrete placement will continue uninterrupted for four days in a tough technological regime. Some 130 people, 8 concrete placers and up to 40 mixers are working here. B35 grade concrete on a sulphate-resistant Portland cement base with frost resistance class F300 and water permeability W12 is being used for grillage erection. It will protect the foundation from the aggressive environment and protect reinforcing bars from corrosion. Total M7 pylon foundation area is about 3200 square meters, some 20 000 cubic meters of concrete will be used for its construction. A special self-compacting concrete composition and technical regulations were developed for the grillage that will take the main loads from the pylon. The highly mobile mix that is being laid in a continuous cycle with special additives and micro-fillers is manufactured at USK MOST production facilities in Vladivostok. The continuous concrete laying technique was honed together with TSNIIS (Moscow) experts, who developed the technical regulations for pylon construction work. Over 300 load combinations were computed in the giant foundation design process based on the grillage’s own weight, span structure, various bridge installations and traffic loads. Total vertical load onto the grillage from the pylon will be some 220 000 tons. Dangerous force impacts – from earthquakes to impacts from vessels of several tens of thousands of tons displacement – were also considered.
